Getting Started with Curse of Strahd

A DM's guide to running one of D&D's most beloved horror campaigns, from session zero to the final confrontation in Castle Ravenloft.

Why Curse of Strahd?

Curse of Strahd is widely considered one of the best campaign modules ever published for D&D 5th Edition. It offers a Gothic horror sandbox that gives DMs incredible freedom while providing enough structure to guide new game masters.

Session Zero Essentials

Before diving into Barovia, a strong session zero is critical. Horror campaigns require buy-in from your players, and Curse of Strahd deals with themes that need to be discussed upfront.

Topics to Cover

  • Horror Consent: Use safety tools like the X-Card or Lines & Veils
  • Character Motivation: Why would your character venture into a land of darkness?
  • Tone Expectations: This isn’t a lighthearted romp — death is real and frequent
  • Party Composition: Recommend a mix of martial and divine characters

The Card Reading

The Tarokka card reading is the campaign’s signature mechanic. It randomizes key item locations and determines Strahd’s motivations. Consider doing a “real” reading with physical Tarokka cards for dramatic effect.

Tips for the Reading

  1. Practice the reading beforehand so it flows naturally
  2. Consider pre-selecting certain cards if randomness would create a poor experience
  3. Record the results somewhere accessible — you’ll reference them constantly

Pacing the Campaign

Barovia is a sandbox, but new DMs often struggle with pacing. Here’s a rough level guide:

LevelSuggested Area
3-4Village of Barovia, Tser Pool
4-5Vallaki, Old Bonegrinder
5-7Wizard of Wines, Yester Hill
7-9Krezk, Abbey of Saint Markovia
9+Amber Temple, Castle Ravenloft

Making Strahd Memorable

Strahd should be a constant presence throughout the campaign. He’s not just waiting in his castle — he’s watching, testing, and toying with the party.

  • Have Strahd appear socially before any combat encounter
  • Use Strahd’s spies (bats, wolves, Vistani) to show he’s always watching
  • Give Strahd genuine moments of charm and vulnerability alongside his cruelty
