The Devil Strahd
Count Strahd von Zarovich is the ancient vampire lord of Barovia, bound to the valley by the Dark Powers as both its ruler and its prisoner. He is arguably the most iconic villain in all of D&D.
History
Strahd was once a mortal conqueror who claimed the valley that would bear his family name. His descent into darkness began with his obsession with Tatyana, his brother Sergei’s betrothed. On the day of their wedding, Strahd murdered Sergei, made a pact with dark powers, and became a vampire. Tatyana threw herself from the castle walls rather than submit to him.
Motivations
Strahd’s core motivation is finding a successor to Tatyana’s soul — someone he believes can break his curse or at least provide him companionship in his eternal prison. He is:
- Obsessive: He has waited centuries for Tatyana’s reincarnation
- Bored: Immortality in a sealed valley has left him desperate for entertainment
- Proud: He considers himself the rightful lord and expects deference
- Lonely: Beneath the cruelty, there is genuine isolation
Combat Tactics
Strahd is a CR 15 enemy, but his real power comes from the environment:
| Advantage | Details |
|---|---|
| Lair Actions | He can pass through walls, summon swarms, and close doors in Castle Ravenloft |
| Heart of Sorrow | Absorbs 50 points of damage before Strahd takes any |
| Spellcasting | He’s a capable spellcaster with charm, fog cloud, and fireball |
| Retreat | He can phase through walls to regenerate and return later |
