The Keepers of the Feather

The Keepers of the Feather are a secret society of wereravens who operate the Wizard of Wines winery and the Blue Water Inn in Vallaki. They are the closest thing Barovia has to a resistance movement against Strahd.

Organization

The faction is built around the Martikov family:

  • Davian Martikov — patriarch, runs the Wizard of Wines winery
  • Urwin Martikov — Davian’s estranged son, runs the Blue Water Inn
  • Muriel Vinshaw — a key operative who scouts the roads as a raven

Goals

  1. Preserve the winery — Barovia’s only source of wine, and therefore hope
  2. Gather intelligence — ravens spy on Strahd’s forces throughout the valley
  3. Aid outsiders — they quietly help adventurers who oppose Strahd
  4. Protect the gems — three enchanted gems power the winery’s vineyards

Making Them Compelling

The Keepers work best when they feel like a genuine underground resistance:

  • Trust is earned — they don’t reveal their wereraven nature immediately
  • They have limits — they’re spies, not soldiers; they won’t fight Strahd directly
  • Internal conflict — Davian and Urwin’s estrangement creates family drama
  • Real stakes — if the winery falls, all of Barovia loses its last comfort

  • The wine shipments have stopped — what happened at the winery?
  • A raven keeps following the party, trying to lead them somewhere
  • Urwin asks the party to check on his father, whom he hasn’t spoken to in years
