Village of Barovia

A guide to running the grim Village of Barovia, the party's first taste of Strahd's domain.

Overview

The Village of Barovia is a decaying settlement huddled beneath Castle Ravenloft’s shadow. It’s the party’s introduction to the oppressive atmosphere of the campaign and should set the tone for everything that follows.

Key Locations

Blood on the Vine Tavern

The only functioning business in town, run by Arik the barkeep — a man so broken by despair he barely speaks. This is where the party meets Ismark Kolyanovich.

Burgomaster’s Mansion

Home to Ismark and his sister Ireena Kolyana. The mansion shows signs of repeated attacks — claw marks on the walls, broken windows hastily boarded up. Their father, the burgomaster, has recently died.

Church of the Morninglord

Father Donavich’s church, where his son Doru — now a vampire spawn — is locked in the undercroft. The screaming from below is audible during services.

Atmosphere Tips

  • Sound: Describe the wind constantly — it never stops in Barovia
  • Color: Everything is muted grays and browns; even the sky is overcast
  • NPCs: Villagers avoid eye contact and speak in whispers
  • Smell: Woodsmoke, damp earth, and something faintly sweet and rotten

Running the Village

The village works best as a short stop (1-2 sessions). Key objectives:

  1. Meet Ismark and learn about Ireena
  2. Discover the burgomaster’s death and attend the funeral
  3. Encounter Doru in the church basement
  4. Receive a hook pointing toward Vallaki or Tser Pool
