Strahd Zombie
Medium undead, unaligned
Strahd Zombies are the reanimated corpses of those who died in Barovia, raised by the ambient necromantic energy of the land itself. They differ from standard zombies in one gruesome way: their limbs keep fighting after being severed.

Loathsome Limbs
This is what makes Strahd Zombies memorable. When the zombie takes slashing damage, a limb might detach and continue fighting independently:
- Severed arms crawl toward enemies and grapple them
- Severed legs can still kick
- The torso keeps fighting even after losing all four limbs
- Each severed part has its own HP pool
Tactical Tips for DMs
Making Them Scary
- Describe the first limb detachment in vivid detail — it should shock the players
- Have severed hands crawl under doors or through narrow gaps
- Use them in dark environments where players hear scrabbling but can’t see what’s coming
Combat Encounters
- Pair Strahd Zombies with regular zombies so players learn the difference the hard way
- Use narrow corridors where severed limbs block retreat paths
- A zombie rising from a shallow grave mid-combat is always effective
Scaling
- At low levels (3-4): 2-3 Strahd Zombies are a solid medium encounter
- At mid levels (5-7): Use them in waves or combined with a more dangerous leader
- At high levels (8+): They serve as atmospheric hazards rather than real threats
