Quest Overview
The Tome of Strahd is one of three treasures identified by the Tarokka card reading. Unlike the Sunsword and the Holy Symbol, the Tome doesn’t provide combat power — it provides knowledge, which in a horror campaign can be even more valuable.
What the Tome Contains
The Tome is Strahd’s personal journal, written in his own hand. It reveals:
- His origin story — how he conquered the valley and murdered Sergei
- His pact with death — the deal that made him a vampire
- His obsession with Tatyana — and how he sees Ireena as her reincarnation
- His weaknesses — not explicitly, but a clever reader can infer them
Possible Locations
The Tarokka reading determines where the Tome is found. Common locations include:
- Old Bonegrinder — hidden among the hags’ possessions
- Vallaki — in the attic of the Burgomaster’s mansion
- Amber Temple — among the dark vestiges
- Castle Ravenloft — in Strahd’s study or catacombs
Making the Tome Matter
The Tome is often the least exciting of the three treasures mechanically, but you can make it pivotal:
- Read it aloud — prepare key passages to read dramatically to the players
- Strahd reacts — he’s furious that outsiders have read his private thoughts
- Hidden clues — add marginal notes that hint at the location of other treasures
- Moral complexity — the journal shows Strahd’s humanity before his fall; it should make players feel something
Quest Hooks
- Madam Eva explicitly mentions a book that “holds the devil’s darkest secrets”
- A Vistani storyteller speaks of a tome that drove its last reader mad
- Ezmerelda or Van Richten mention that understanding your enemy is the first step to defeating them
