Asharra is an exceptionally old aarakocra who leads the community of Kir Sabal, a monastery built into cliffs 500 feet above the jungle. The other aarakocra revere her as “Teacher” and regard her as a living saint. She serves as the protector and educator of the last surviving descendants of Omu’s royal line: Princess Mwaxanaré (17) and Prince Na (6).

Personality and Motivations

Asharra is intelligent, ambitious, and manipulative—though never cruel or insensitive. While she claims to shelter the royal heirs solely for the future of Chult, she secretly hopes the aarakocra will be elevated to key positions in any renewed Chultan kingdom. Her education of Mwaxanaré deliberately distorts the princess’s worldview, teaching her that Chult is the center of power and other kingdoms will eagerly support her claim.

Asharra becomes dangerous if she suspects visitors might reveal inconvenient truths to Mwaxanaré or develop romantic attachments that could lead to tragedy. She keeps four potions of poison disguised as healing potions under her bed and considers eliminating threats to her careful plans—especially concerning given that Kir Sabal is a precarious place for creatures without wings.

The Dance of the Seven Winds

Asharra knows a powerful ritual called the Dance of the Seven Winds that grants magical flight (30 feet speed for 3 days) to up to ten non-flying creatures. The ritual requires:

  • A black orchid (found only in Nangalore) as material component
  • Seven aarakocra to chant prayers to the Wind Dukes of Aaqa
  • 10 minutes of uninterrupted dancing by Asharra

When performed, Asharra’s wings disappear and she loses her ability to fly until the ritual’s effects end. She offers to perform this ritual for characters who plan to visit Omu and destroy the Soulmonger, but warns that eblis (evil cranes) inhabit Nangalore and forbids her people from accompanying them.

Asharra is lawful neutral with 31 hit points. She has Intelligence 14, Wisdom 17, and proficiency in History (+4), Insight (+5), and Perception (+7). She speaks Auran and Common.

As a 5th-level druid (spell save DC 13, +5 to hit), she has prepared:

  • Cantrips: druidcraft, mending, produce flame
  • 1st level (4 slots): detect magic, faerie fire, thunderwave
  • 2nd level (3 slots): gust of wind, hold person, lesser restoration
  • 3rd level (2 slots): call lightning, wind wall

Her challenge rating is 2 (450 XP).

Residence and Daily Life

Asharra lives in the Elder’s House with her elderly servant Yingmatona. Only Mwaxanaré occasionally visits, while young Prince Na comes and goes freely. The house is strictly off-limits to other aarakocra and guests—trespassing is considered a grave breach of hospitality. Her personal quarters contain a library of 44 pre-Spellplague books and her hidden cache of poisoned potions.

Relationship with the Royal Heirs

Asharra exercises complete control over the young royals’ education and worldview. She has taught Mwaxanaré to view herself as already Queen of Chult, deliberately keeping the princess ignorant of how the wider world actually functions. She actively opposes Mwaxanaré’s warlock pact with the Wind Dukes of Aaqa, viewing it as undermining her authority. If characters gain influence over the princess or might reveal truths that threaten Asharra’s plans, they become targets for elimination.
