Overview

Belchorzh the Unseen is an invisible beholder that claims Level 3 of the Tomb of the Nine Gods (the Vault of Reflection) as its home. Despite not being the true master of the tomb, Belchorzh acts as a guardian of its treasure vault and a deadly obstacle for adventurers.

Characteristics

  • Invisibility: The beholder is permanently invisible, making it a particularly dangerous foe
  • Personality: Haughty, defiant, and delights in destroying tomb robbers while refusing to yield
  • Speech Pattern: Refers to itself in the third person and speaks Deep Speech and Undercommon
  • Signature Quotes:
    • “You fight like flumphs!”
    • “You are no match for Belchorzh the Unseen’s terrible eye rays!”
    • “What ugly, imperfect creatures you are.”

Lair and Abilities

Belchorzh has infected Level 3 of the dungeon with weird alien growth that serves as an extension of its defenses. While it cannot use traditional beholder lair actions and regional effects (since the tomb is not truly its domain), the alien growth compensates for this limitation. If adventurers steal even a single copper piece from its treasure hoard, Belchorzh can animate the alien growth throughout the level—causing it to sprout eyestalks and attack intruders.

Combat Tactics

In battle, Belchorzh maintains maximum distance from adventurers while carefully positioning itself to avoid catching the iron sphere (found in its vault) in its Antimagic Cone. The beholder does not pursue fleeing intruders beyond its vault, but will relentlessly use the alien growth against thieves who take its treasure.
