Commander Breakbone is the Order of the Gauntlet commander in charge of Camp Vengeance, a fortified military outpost near the heart of Chult’s undead-infested jungle. He is a traditional military leader who struggles with guerrilla warfare—he understands conventional battles with “battle lines, waving banners, trumpets, and supply trains,” but the war of ambush and jungle combat mystifies and frustrates him. He spends most of his time in his command tent poring over inaccurate maps and reviewing supply reports while his subordinates, Ord Firebeard and Perne Salhana, effectively manage the camp in his absence.
Interactions with Characters
Breakbone makes immediate and potentially unreasonable demands on visiting adventurers:
- If arriving by boat: He requires them to transport seven sick soldiers (suffering from blue mist fever, shivering sickness, or throat leeches) and carry messages downriver to Port Nyanzaru
- If arriving on foot: He insists they lead a detachment (four guards and four tribal warriors) on a two-week patrol to destroy undead
Refusing these requests results in arrest and imprisonment in the guard towers. If found guilty of insubordination, the penalty is being stripped of gear, tied to trees in the forest, and left for carnivores or undead. This marks characters for death by the Order of the Gauntlet throughout Chult and potentially the wider Realms.
Avoiding His Judgment
Characters can avoid Breakbone’s harsh judgment through:
- Undril Silvertusk’s intervention: If characters escorted her to camp and gained her respect, she will intercede on their behalf
- Persuading his subordinates: Both Ord Firebeard and Perne Salhana can be swayed with DC 15 Charisma (Persuasion) checks if the character presents a sound case for leniency
Other Significance
Nanny Pu’pu, the night hag at Mbala, considers “a lock of Commander Breakbone’s hair and a few of his fingernails” valuable payment for performing the Rite of Stolen Life, intending to use them for evil magic.
