Jarl Storvald is a frost giant lord who commands a crew of frost giants sailing the massive longship Hvalspyd from the Sea of Moving Ice. Though Storvald himself does not appear directly in the adventure, his influence drives a major threat to the region.
Motivations
Storvald seeks the Ring of Winter to freeze the world and bring about the “Age of Everlasting Ice.” His ambitions and connection to this artifact are detailed in the adventure Storm King’s Thunder. He knows nothing of Acererak, the Soulmonger, or the death curse affecting Chult.
Forces in Chult
Storvald dispatched an expedition of twenty frost giants aboard the Hvalspyd to retrieve the Ring of Winter from Artus Cimber. The expedition is led by Captain Drufi (NE female frost giant), who remains focused on fulfilling her jarl’s dream. The crew has split into search parties scouring the jungle, though they find the tropical environment hellish and are out of their element. Despite their discomfort, they have no intention of failing Storvald or letting the ring escape their grasp.
Persistent Threat
Storvald’s frost giants represent one of several factions pursuing the Ring of Winter throughout and beyond the adventure. Unlike the characters dealing with the death curse, Storvald’s forces will not stop searching for Artus Cimber, even if the characters complete their primary mission and return to civilization.
