Joho is a stuffed monkey doll with the lower body of a unicycle, created by the Sewn Sisters (three night hags) as a cruel plaything. A child’s soul has been implanted within the doll, effectively trapping them in this tiny construct form.
Physical Description & Abilities
- Stats: Tiny construct, AC 10, 1 hit point, 10 ft. walking speed
- Immunities: Poison damage and the poisoned condition
- Limitation: Coughs on its stuffing when attempting to speak, making communication difficult
Role in the Adventure
Joho serves as one of three imprisoned soul-dolls encountered near the skeleton gate. Along with Strawbundle (a straw doll) and Clay No-Face (a clay figure), Joho can provide adventurers with critical information about:
- The Sewn Sisters’ nature as night hags
- The skeleton gate requiring five skeleton keys to unlock
- The five trials in adjoining rooms (areas 72-76) that open the gate’s keyholes
- A creature being nursed beyond the skeleton gate
- The torture of a “lookie-like” (doppelganger) in a nearby cage
The dolls desperately want freedom from their captors but cannot leave their chamber unless physically carried out.
Joho’s Charm
If a character befriends Joho, the trapped child’s soul bestows a magical charm (usable once). While carrying Joho, the character gains the benefit of a helm of comprehending languages. This benefit lasts for 7 days while the doll remains in their possession, after which the charm vanishes.
Fate
If Joho is destroyed, the child’s soul becomes permanently trapped in the Soulmonger, making preservation of the doll a moral consideration for adventurers.
