Karagos is a deceased minotaur who served as a guardian of the ancient city of Omu. His skull now crowns the throne of Acererak in the Tomb of the Nine Gods.
Role in the Tomb
Karagos’s skull sits atop Acererak’s throne, which is constructed from the skin and bones of slain Omuan warriors and surrounded by the skulls of Omuan children. The skull serves as a cursed trap within the throne room.
The Curse
The skull is imbued with the Rage of Karagos, a powerful curse that triggers when any creature touches the skull or sits in the throne. The victim must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or suffer the following effects:
- Gains 50 temporary hit points
- Goes berserk, forced to attack the nearest visible creature with melee attacks
- Cannot make ranged attacks or cast spells
- Does nothing if no creatures are visible to attack
The curse ends only when the berserk creature drops to 0 hit points, or if a greater restoration or remove curse spell is cast on them. When the curse ends, the temporary hit points disappear.
Spirit Knowledge
The trickster god spirit Papazotl, if inhabiting a character, can identify that the throne is made from the bones of dead Omuans and specifically recognize Karagos’s skull. The spirit Obo’laka warns against disturbing the throne or scepter, though doesn’t know the specific danger.
