Krr’ook is a red grung wildling who serves as the priest of Dungrunglung, a grung settlement plagued by undead. She plays a crucial supporting role in the settlement’s storyline.
Role and Characteristics
Krr’ook maintains her position by whispering favorable signs and omens in King Groak’s ear, carefully managing the unstable ruler’s moods. Despite her outward loyalty, she harbors serious doubts about the king’s sanity and his obsessive plan to summon the goddess Nangnang through a “Great Ritual.” She fears that when the ritual inevitably fails, Groak will blame and kill her.
The Great Ritual Plot
Krr’ook secretly approaches the adventuring party to help her execute a desperate deception. She has hidden a box of Nolzur’s marvelous pigments from the king and plans to use them to create a convincing fake manifestation of Nangnang during the ritual.
Her plan requires the adventurers to:
- Paint or craft a convincing representation of Nangnang (using the magical pigments)
- Animate it through magic or performance
- Voice the goddess with honeyed words to convince Groak he has won her favor
- Stage a blessed departure that leaves Groak satisfied
Rewards and Consequences
If the party helps her successfully fool Groak (succeeding at 3+ of the 4 ability checks required), Krr’ook gives them the Nolzur’s marvelous pigments and a ring of jumping as rewards. The king becomes very happy and cooperative with the party’s requests.
However, if Krr’ook senses anything amiss or if the ritual goes wrong, she immediately scapegoats the adventurers and delivers them to King Groak’s wrath. If the deception is discovered, Groak orders the entire settlement to attack—16 grung elite warriors and 40 common grungs.
Daily Activities
During normal times, Krr’ook works in the shrine (area 4) with six blue-skinned grung assistants, tending phosphorescent fungi in the shallow pool and scenting the water with perfumes in preparation for the Great Ritual. She also communicates with prisoners held in the prison pit (area 7), attempting to recruit them for her scheme.
Knowledge
According to the Adventure Summary, if the DM chooses, Krr’ook is one of several NPCs who might possess knowledge about either Omu’s location or the source of the death curse, making her potentially valuable beyond her immediate storyline.
