Niles Breakbone is the templar in charge of Camp Vengeance, a fortified base of the Order of the Gauntlet located on the River Soshenstar near the Aldani Basin. He is a male Chondathan human noble and devout worshiper of Tyr.
Role and Position
Breakbone serves as the commander of Camp Vengeance, which was established after the Order of the Gauntlet’s previous base, Camp Righteous, was overrun by undead. He leads the Order’s efforts to combat the undead menace in Chult, though the camp has fallen on hard times under his leadership.
Personality and Leadership
Despite being dedicated to everything the Order of the Gauntlet represents, Breakbone is poorly suited to commanding a post like Camp Vengeance. He is described as “woefully inept” as a commander. His lieutenants—Captains Ord Firebeard and Perne Salhana—are more likely to share useful information or offer aid to adventurers than Breakbone himself.
Relationships
- Wulf Rygor - A half-elf scout who is Breakbone’s longtime friend and leads the camp’s Chultan hunters and scouts alongside Lorsa Bilwatal
- Sister Cyas - The priest of Helm who leads the camp’s religious corps
- Undril Silvertusk - A half-orc priest of Torm who needs to deliver dispatches to Breakbone at Camp Vengeance. If adventurers gain Undril’s respect, she will intercede strongly on their behalf if difficulties arise with Commander Breakbone (as they are likely to)
Camp Conditions
Under Breakbone’s command, the garrison of fifty-eight people faces constant hardship. The camp is disease-ridden from unwholesome vapors and insects from the nearby Aldani Basin. Warriors are exhausted from battles against giant jungle carnivores by day and undead by night, with the actual number of effective fighters usually lower than the official count due to sickness.
