Ubtao

I’ll analyze the source text and write a concise summary about Ubtao.

Ubtao is the greater god who once protected Chult and its civilization, serving as a central figure in the region’s history and spiritual identity.

Role in Chult’s History

Ubtao abandoned Chult over a century ago, growing angry at his worshipers’ endless warfare and their constant reliance on him to solve their problems. Since his departure, his influence has not been felt in the land. While this abandonment dealt the Chultans a severe spiritual blow, it ultimately forced the disunited, warring tribes to set aside their conflicts and unite as one people.

Despite his absence, many Chultans still revere the dinosaurs of Chult as Ubtao’s sacred children, though Ubtao himself is no longer widely worshiped. With his departure, Chultans turned to other deities including Waukeen, Gond, Savras, Sune, and Tymora.

Associated Symbolism

Ubtao is strongly associated with mazes and labyrinthine symbols. According to legend, “the great god Ubtao loved mazes,” and those who trace paths through mazes earn his favor. These maze symbols appear prominently throughout Chult:

  • Carved into ancient bridges like the Monkey Bridge at Ataaz Muhahah
  • Painted on monastery buildings and floors in Kir Sabal
  • Featured in shrine decorations and religious architecture

The proper homage to Ubtao involves tracing an unbroken path through one of these symbolic labyrinths with a fingertip.

Connection to Omu

Ubtao turned his back on Omu approximately two hundred years ago—long before abandoning the rest of Chult—due to the city’s greed, hubris, and brutal exploitation of neighboring peoples. When he withdrew his favor, Omu’s clerics lost their spells, and the city fell to disease and uprisings, earning it the name “the Forbidden City.”

After Ubtao’s departure from Omu, nine primal spirits (the trickster gods) arose to fill the void, disguising themselves as jungle creatures. The desperate Omuans tore down their temple to Ubtao and built shrines to these new deities instead.

Manifestations and Sacred Sites

  • Heart of Ubtao: A massive earthmote (floating chunk of rock) with a petrified tree that resembles a stone heart. Many Chultans believe this is the actual petrified heart of Ubtao and consider it sacred. Priests of Ubtao once traveled here on flying dinosaurs to seek visions and beseech the god to return.

  • Depictions: Ubtao is sometimes portrayed in tabaxi form in ancient statues, particularly in Kir Sabal. These life-size wooden statues are draped in offerings and treated as talismans of protection.

Role in Yuan-ti Prophecy

The yuan-ti of Omu believe that a sealed portal beneath the Peaks of Flame, if opened, would allow Dendar the Night Serpent to enter the world. According to their beliefs, Ubtao was supposed to stand against Dendar—but with Ubtao gone from the world, they believe nothing can stop the Night Serpent from destroying creation.

Guardian Constructs

At least one stone golem was created to defend sacred Ubtao sites, such as the shrine on the Monkey Bridge. This golem attacks those who desecrate Ubtao’s symbols, damage his bridges, or fail to perform the proper maze-tracing ritual.

Game Mechanics

The stone golem guardian on the Monkey Bridge uses standard stone golem statistics and attacks anyone who:

  • Desecrates the shrine or its decorations
  • Damages the bridge structure
  • Passes without tracing a maze path correctly with their fingertip

The golem prefers to push enemies off the bridge and has advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks to resist being pushed due to its immense weight.
