Widow Groat is one of the three Sewn Sisters, a coven of night hags recruited by Acererak for their expertise in stitching soul bags—a craft they adapted to create the Soulmonger. She serves as one of the tomb’s primary antagonists and guardian forces.

Appearance and Characteristics

Widow Groat has tarnished gold coins covering her eyes and ants nesting in her skull. The ants serve as her spies, and their presence often signals her arrival. This gives her enhanced surveillance capabilities throughout the tomb.

Possessions

Widow Groat carries several important items:

  • A heartstone (standard night hag item for planar travel)
  • A soul bag (used in the Soulmonger’s creation and function)
  • An iron ring with eight keys that unlock the shackles in area 78 (the chapel where eight nothics are imprisoned)

Combat Considerations

Characters who consume the roast boar from the magical feast in the tomb gain advantage on Strength checks but suffer disadvantage on attack rolls made against Widow Groat for 24 hours. This curse is designed to protect her specifically.

Coven Powers

As part of the Sewn Sisters coven with Peggy Deadbells and Baggy Nanna, Widow Groat shares access to the coven’s pool of spells. The coven’s hag eye is carried by the scarecrow Mister Threadneedle in area 74, giving them remote scrying capabilities.

Role in the Adventure

Widow Groat and her sisters are nursing a creature (the atropal) beyond the skeleton gate. They have been torturing a doppelganger prisoner to learn more about the adventurers. The hags’ dolls (Strawbundle, Clay No-Face, and Joho) warn that the Sewn Sisters will return at any moment, creating urgency for parties exploring their domain.
