Overview

Ygga Raxyg is an arcanaloth bound to the Red Library (area 80) on level 5 of the Tomb of the Nine Gods by Acererak’s magic. The fiend disguises itself as an elderly man using alter self and goes by the alias “Mr. Fox.” It serves as guardian of a collection containing the wisdom of a hundred sages, along with spellbooks and scrolls.

Appearance & Behavior

In its disguised form, Ygga Raxyg appears as an old man wearing horn-rimmed spectacles, typically found resting in a padded leather chair with a spellbook open on its lap. The fiend pretends to be asleep when characters approach and feigns being disturbed when awakened, asking “Why do you disturb me?”

The arcanaloth refuses to reveal its true name, insisting on being called “Mr. Fox.”

Binding & Limitations

Acererak’s magic binds Ygga Raxyg to the library with specific restrictions:

  • Cannot leave the library
  • Cannot allow any books or scrolls to be removed from the collection

Defeating the Arcanaloth

True Name Power: If any character speaks the arcanaloth’s true name (“Ygga Raxyg”) within earshot, the fiend is stunned for 1 minute. This effect only works once per 24-hour period.

Death: When killed, Ygga Raxyg melts into a pool of ichor, leaving behind only its robes and horn-rimmed spectacles.

Learning the True Name

The Sewn Sisters (night hags encountered at the Skeleton Gate) may reveal Ygga Raxyg’s true name as part of a bargain if the characters spare the last surviving hag. The hag describes: “Hidden on this level of the dungeon is a library of lost lore, guarded by an arcanaloth whose true name is Ygga Raxyg.”

Location Context

The Red Library contains walls painted the color of dried blood, cobweb-draped bookcases, and three dangling corpses—the remains of archmagi who died within the past month from destructive spells while trying to meddle in Acererak’s affairs. Soft dulcimer music plays from a lantern-shaped device on a small table.
