Overview
Zagmira is a high-ranking Red Wizard of Thay leading an expedition to Omu to find and claim the Soulmonger. She appears as an eighteen-year-old woman with a grotesque deformity—one half of her face is wizened and old—the result of a dark ritual in which she inhabited the body of her own granddaughter.
Role in the Adventure
Zagmira commands a group of four Red Wizards (including Dyrax, Thazma, and Yamoch) and eight mercenary thugs searching Omu for the puzzle cubes needed to enter the Tomb of the Nine Gods. Her forces suffered heavy losses in a yuan-ti night raid shortly before the party’s arrival, but the survivors continue their mission undeterred.
She has identified the entrance to the Tomb of the Nine Gods (area 14) and correctly believes the Soulmonger is held within. The Red Wizards have split up to search for the nine puzzle cubes required to unlock the tomb’s entrance.
Key Relationships
Orvex: A scribe and translator serving the Red Wizards, though his loyalty is weak and the party can easily befriend him away from Zagmira’s service.
Ishmakahl: Zagmira’s supposed spy in the yuan-ti temple—actually a doppelganger she planted by having it kill and replace a yuan-ti pureblood. She keeps the spy’s true nature secret even from potential allies.
Voj: One of her subordinate Red Wizards who was petrified while attempting to retrieve Obo’laka’s puzzle cube from area 19E.
Potential Alliance
Zagmira is pragmatic enough to form temporary alliances with adventurers to recover puzzle cubes held by the yuan-ti. If such an accord is reached, she:
- Reveals her spy Ishmakahl’s existence (but not that he’s a doppelganger)
- Suggests human characters infiltrate the yuan-ti temple disguised as purebloods, with nonhumans posing as servants
- Offers to cast invisibility (using a 5th-level spell slot) on up to four party members if no humans are present
Betrayal
This alliance is purely tactical. Once the characters emerge from the yuan-ti temple with recovered puzzle cubes, the Red Wizards turn on them to claim all the cubes for themselves. If Artus Cimber is present, they also attempt to steal the Ring of Winter.
If the Red Wizards successfully obtain all nine puzzle cubes, they enter the Tomb of the Nine Gods where they gradually fall prey to the tomb’s deadly traps.
Game Mechanics
Stat Block: Uses mage statistics (LE female Thayan human)
Spellbook: Carries a spellbook containing all her prepared spells
Equipment: Standard Red Wizard attire—red robes, shaved head
Appearance: Sallow complexion typical of Thayan mages, with the distinctive age-split face marking her dark past
