The Dance of the Seven Winds is a powerful aarakocra ritual that temporarily grants magical flight to nonflying creatures. The ritual serves as a significant reward that adventurers can obtain to aid their exploration of Chult and approach to the Tomb of the Nine Gods.
Properties and Requirements
The ritual can grant magical flight to up to ten nonflying creatures simultaneously. The ceremony requires:
- An aarakocra elder to perform it (at Kir Sabal, this is Asharra, the Teacher)
- A black orchid as a material component, found only in the ruins of Nangalore
- Seven additional aarakocra to chant prayers to the Wind Dukes of Aaqa
- 10 minutes to complete
Ritual Mechanics
The performing aarakocra elder must grind the black orchid to powder, inhale it, and dance in circles around the beneficiaries without interruption while the seven other aarakocra chant. When the dance concludes, the elder’s wings disappear and she loses her own ability to fly.
The ritual’s beneficiaries each gain a magical flying speed of 30 feet (4 miles per hour). This benefit lasts for 3 days, after which the elder’s wings reappear and she regains her ability to fly.
How Characters Learn of It
Characters can learn about the Dance of the Seven Winds from Nephyr, a male aarakocra prisoner they might rescue from pterafolk at Firefinger’s peak. If freed, Nephyr urges the characters to visit Kir Sabal and petition Asharra to perform the ritual. He spreads word of their heroism when he returns, granting the characters advantage on Charisma checks made to influence the aarakocra of Kir Sabal.
Obtaining the Ritual
If characters tell Asharra of their plan to visit Omu and destroy the Soulmonger, she offers to perform the Dance of the Seven Winds for them. However, she needs a black orchid to complete it. She can provide directions to Nangalore but forbids her people from going there due to the evil eblis (intelligent cranes) that inhabit the ruins. The characters must retrieve the orchid themselves before Asharra will perform the ritual.
