The Navel of the Moon is a fabled treasure hidden within the Tomb of the Nine Gods, one of four legendary items Acererak placed in the tomb as lures. It is a polished, egg-shaped stone said to be carved from a chunk of the moon itself, roughly fist-sized and worth 2,500 gp (potentially three times that at auction in major cities).

History and Legend

The stone was originally a gift from the ruling syl-pasha of Calimport to his sailor daughter. According to legend, anyone who holds the Navel of the Moon can always find the way home to their loved ones—though whether this power is real is left ambiguous.

Connection to Bag of Nails

The tabaxi hunter Bag of Nails came to Omu specifically to find the Navel of the Moon, hoping to use its alleged powers to locate his lost son. However, he failed in his search and has since descended into senility and despair. If befriended (or if reduced below half hit points), he may reveal his original quest to the party, though he has long since abandoned hope of finding the stone.

Location

The Navel of the Moon is located in area 56 of the Tomb of the Nine Gods, fixed to the tip of a grandfather clock’s pendulum inside a secret room. If removed from the pendulum, the clock loses its magical properties and stops working entirely.

Post-Adventure Complications

If the characters attempt to sell the stone in major cities like Baldur’s Gate or Port Nyanzaru, word quickly reaches spies of wealthy Calishite merchants. This may trigger:

  • A bidding war among interested buyers
  • Assassination attempts to retrieve the stone and eliminate its new owner

Whether the Navel of the Moon truly possesses the power to reunite separated families is left to the DM’s discretion.
