Description and Purpose
Volo’s Guide to Monsters is a recently published book authored by the legendary world traveler Volothamp “Volo” Geddarm. The book serves as an in-world reference tome containing creature lore and information about various monsters.
Availability
The book is available for purchase in Port Nyanzaru for 50 gp (hardcover edition). Volo himself is in the city to deliver signed copies to the merchant princes and promote his latest work. Characters are most likely to encounter him hawking his book in the city’s inns, taverns, or in merchant prince villas.
Mechanical Use
When characters own a copy of this book, they can consult it to learn lore about any monster described within. The DM should provide useful narrative information and creature tidbits, but not game statistics (such information wouldn’t be available in-world).
If the actual Volo’s Guide to Monsters reference book is unavailable, the DM can substitute information from appendix D of the adventure.
Notes on Accuracy
While Volo presents his information with hearty avowals of accuracy, not everything in the book is necessarily true—reflecting the author’s occasionally unreliable nature as a source of information.
