Cloak of the Harvest Moon
Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement by a druid or ranger)
This cloak is woven from autumn leaves that never decay, held together by threads of silver moonlight. The clasp is a crescent moon carved from pale wood.
Properties
The cloak has two modes that shift with the moon. The DM determines which phase is active, or you can use real-world lunar phases for immersion.
Waxing Mode (New Moon to Full Moon)
The cloak shimmers with a faint golden glow.
- Harvest’s Bounty: Once per long rest, you can cast goodberry without expending a spell slot. The berries appear as tiny golden apples.
- Growing Light: You gain a +1 bonus to AC while in dim light or darkness.
Waning Mode (Full Moon to New Moon)
The cloak darkens to deep crimson and brown.
- Autumn’s Decay: Once per long rest, you can cast blight (DC 15) without expending a spell slot. The target appears to age rapidly as leaves wither around them.
- Fading Shadow: You have advantage on Stealth checks made in natural environments.
Full Moon (One Night Only)
On the night of the full moon, both modes are active simultaneously, and you additionally gain:
- Moonfire: Your weapon attacks deal an extra 1d4 radiant damage until dawn.
Design Notes
This item is designed for Tier 2 play (levels 5-10). The alternating modes prevent it from being always-on powerful while still feeling impactful. The full moon bonus rewards players who track in-game time.
Balance Rating: Playtested across 12 sessions. The blight cast felt strong at level 5 but appropriate by level 7-8 when the party had access to similar resources.
