Athkatla is a distant northern city where some Chultans have migrated and established outposts. It represents one of several foreign urban centers (along with Baldur’s Gate, Calimport, Memnon, and Zazesspur) where Chultan expatriate communities exist outside their native jungle homeland.
Role in the Setting
Athkatla serves as part of the broader diaspora network for Chultans who left their ancestral lands. These migrations occurred after monsters and undead drove many Chultans from the jungle, forcing them to seek refuge behind the walls of Port Nyanzaru or to establish presences in foreign cities to the north.
Relationship to Chult
The city has no direct role in the Tomb of Annihilation adventure but provides context for the Chultan people’s reach beyond their tropical homeland. Chultans in cities like Athkatla maintain connections to their culture while adapting to life in foreign lands, potentially serving as traders or intermediaries for goods from Chult such as gold, gemstones, spices, rare herbs, ivory, and wood.
