Camp Righteous is an abandoned riverside fortification that served as the Order of the Gauntlet’s first forward base in their campaign against the undead threat in Chult. The camp was built around an ancient Chultan shrine called the House of the Crocodile and now stands in ruins as a grim testament to the order’s initial overconfidence.

History and Fall

When the Order of the Gauntlet first brought their war against the undead to Chult, they established Camp Righteous with minimal defenses, believing their martial prowess alone would provide sufficient protection. This proved catastrophic when hundreds of undead swarmed from the jungle and overran the camp several months ago. Only a handful of warriors escaped the slaughter, retreating upriver to eventually establish the more fortified Camp Vengeance. The bodies of the fallen have since been buried by reinforcements or dragged away by scavengers.

Current State

The camp is now a wreckage-strewn ruin with moldy, tattered tents and burned permanent structures. Two intact rowboats remain tied to a short dock by the river. Despite its abandonment, the location occasionally draws visitors—Artus Cimber and Dragonbait may be found here exploring the ruins as they search for Orolunga or gather information about the death curse.

The House of the Crocodile

North of the camp stands an 80-foot-tall stone statue carved to depict a man with a crocodile on his back. Between the statue’s feet, a stone archway leads into a dark tunnel—the entrance to the ancient shrine. The Order of the Gauntlet was intensely curious about this shrine but never managed to penetrate its depths, as the ruins’ still-active traps overcame their attempts. A crude animal pen sits to the left of the statue, containing a small, panicked bird.

Current Threats

A band of Batiri goblins led by a goblin boss named Yokka watches the camp from the northern foliage. The group consists of two goblins per player character plus Yokka himself. While the goblins believe the shrine is cursed and avoid it directly, Yokka had a vision of treasure inside that could elevate his status within the tribe. After spending a tenday trying to muster courage to tackle the shrine’s traps, the goblins now see arriving adventurers as either convenient trap-clearers or weakened prey upon emergence.

The goblins employ harassment tactics: stealing or sabotaging unguarded boats, setting ambuses outside the shrine entrance, or using horns and animal calls to attract nearby threats (1d8 zombies and 1d8 skeletons, or a hungry allosaurus with 1d4 + 1 axe beaks). They conceal their presence behind wooden masks, striking only when the moment seems most advantageous.
