Camp Vengeance is a fortified military outpost established by the Order of the Gauntlet in the jungles of Chult, located on the River Soshenstar near the Aldani Basin. It serves as the order’s forward base in their campaign against the undead threat plaguing the region.
History and Purpose
Camp Vengeance was built as a replacement for Camp Righteous, the Order of the Gauntlet’s original base that was overrun by hundreds of undead several months ago. After the massacre at Camp Righteous, a handful of surviving warriors retreated upriver and established this new fortification three days later. The camp has since been reinforced and transformed into a much more defensible position than its predecessor, featuring timber walls, watchtowers, a gatehouse facing the river, and a surrounding ditch filled with sharpened stakes.
Current Conditions
Despite its stronger defenses, Camp Vengeance is struggling. The fort suffers from:
- Pestilential conditions: Unwholesome vapors and swarms of insects descend from the nearby Aldani Basin
- Constant attacks: Daily assaults by giant jungle carnivores and nightly raids by undead horrors
- Disease and exhaustion: The garrison is disease-ridden and depleted, with the actual number of effective warriors often below the standard complement due to sickness
- Grim surroundings: Piles of charred human corpses and flayed animal carcasses surround the fort—remains of attackers that have been scavenged for meat
Leadership and Garrison
Commander Niles Breakbone (LG male Chondathan human noble) leads the camp. A devout worshiper of Tyr, Breakbone is dedicated to the Order of the Gauntlet’s ideals but is poorly suited to commanding such a difficult post. He is described as “woefully inept.”
The standard garrison consists of 58 people, organized as follows:
- Military Command: Two captains—Ord Firebeard (LG male gold dwarf veteran) and Perne Salhana (LG female Tethyrian human veteran)
- Fighting Force: Eight veterans and twenty-four guards
- Religious Corps: Six acolytes led by Sister Cyas (LG female Chondathan human priest of Helm), who spend most of their time tending the sick and wounded
- Scouts and Hunters: Fifteen Chultan tribal warriors led by Lorsa Bilwatal (CN female Chultan human scout) and Wulf Rygor (CG male half-elf scout), Breakbone’s longtime friend
Access and Supplies
Four rowboats are tied to a wooden post on the riverbank, providing water access to the fort.
Involvement in the Adventure
Camp Vengeance features in several potential plotlines:
- Side Quest Destination: Undril Silvertusk (LG female half-orc priest of Torm), a representative of the Order of the Gauntlet in Port Nyanzaru, needs escort to deliver herself and dispatches to Commander Breakbone
- Potential Ally: The camp’s lieutenants are more competent than Breakbone and may share useful information or offer aid if characters provide assistance to the camp
- Nanny Pu’pu’s Request: The hag at Mbala might request a lock of Commander Breakbone’s hair and fingernails as payment for performing the Rite of Stolen Life
- NPC Destination: Characters might need to escort rescued prisoners like Zalder Faelrond back to the camp
Despite their dedication and bravery, the Order of the Gauntlet’s expeditions from Camp Vengeance often fare poorly when confronted by conditions that confound their training and contradict their mindset.
