The Crypt of the Sun Queen is a special burial chamber within the Tomb of the Nine Gods, created by Acererak for Napaka, the elderly queen of Omu. When Acererak conquered the city and slew its trickster gods, Napaka chose to remain rather than flee, offering herself as a sacrifice in exchange for her people’s freedom. Though impressed by her courage, Acererak neither spared her life nor honored her request, but did place her in this distinct crypt—a testament to his twisted acknowledgment of her bravery.
Physical Description
The chamber features elaborate decoration reflecting Omu’s culture:
- Walls adorned with tile mosaics depicting a jungle city
- Frescoes of flowering plants, birds, insects, and humans wearing gold skirts carrying spears and ornate jugs
- Ceiling painted to resemble a clear blue sky
- A black basalt sarcophagus in the center of the room
- A two-foot-diameter hammered gold orb hanging from a chain above the sarcophagus, shaped like a smiling sun
- A small bejeweled cockroach resting atop the sarcophagus
The Sarcophagus
The sarcophagus bears the name “NAPAKA” etched in Common on its lid. It is sealed with strips of melted lead that can be easily pried away. Opening requires a successful DC 15 Strength (Athletics) check to push aside the lid. The interior is lined with lead and contains treasures.
Magical Properties
A detect magic spell reveals auras of evocation magic emanating from both the golden sun orb and the bejeweled cockroach, indicating these items possess magical properties.
