The Grand Souk is the largest and most prestigious of Port Nyanzaru’s three major markets (the others being the Jewel Market and the Red Bazaar). Located in the Merchants’ Ward on the western side of the city, it serves as one of the “three beating hearts” of Port Nyanzaru and is the primary trading hub for international commerce.
Commerce and Goods
The Grand Souk caters to traders from up and down the Sword Coast, dealing primarily in Chultan exports and durable goods including:
- Timber, spices, and medicines from jungle plants
- Dinosaur skulls, claws, and plesiosaurus meat
- Tiger pelts, carved ivory, and colored feathers
- Iron and tropical fruit
- Batiri and grung handiwork
- Live monkeys
Everything listed in chapter 5 of the Player’s Handbook can be purchased here. While unusual items (like elephants, which aren’t found in Chult) might not be immediately available, merchants can arrange special orders for the right price.
Atmosphere and Operations
The market operates from before sunrise until well after dark. It’s characterized as a “noisy, jostling, aroma-rich circus” with:
- Colorful awnings providing protection from sun and rain (while trapping heat and smells)
- Numerous guards patrolling the grounds
- Even more numerous urchins and pickpockets
- Street performers and tabaxi minstrels contributing to the cacophony
Distinction from Other Markets
Unlike the Jewel Market (which specializes in gems and luxury items under Zhanthi’s monopoly) or the Red Bazaar (which serves local daily needs), the Grand Souk focuses on international trade and Chultan specialties. Despite being located in the Merchants’ Ward, most of the city’s merchants and traders actually live and work in the Market Ward.
