The Great Pyramid is a massive structure that once stood in Nexal, the capital city of the Maztican Empire. For centuries, the pyramid was crowned by the Eye of Zaltec, a fist-sized ruby that served as a sacred relic of the cult of Zaltec.
History and Significance
The Great Pyramid functioned as a temple for the cult of Zaltec, where the Eye of Zaltec—mounted at the pyramid’s apex—was used in ritual sacrifices. The gem’s dagger-like point was plunged into the hearts of countless victims during these ceremonies.
Current Status
The Eye of Zaltec no longer resides atop the Great Pyramid in Nexal. The relic was somehow removed from its original location and now appears within the Tomb of the Nine Gods in Omu, where it is guarded by a stone juggernaut (area 62).
Connection to Adventure
The Company of the Yellow Banner, an adventuring party, entered Omu specifically seeking the Eye of Zaltec but was never seen again, suggesting the dangers associated with retrieving this artifact from its current location.
