The Haunted Forge serves as the scorched ruin of Wyrmheart Mine’s original forge and workshop, located at the bottom of a staircase. This location became a death trap when the red dragon wyrmling Tinder attacked the mine—dwarven miners retreated here and barricaded themselves, but the dragon incinerated the barricades and burned the defenders alive with her breath weapon.

Appearance

The entire area from the bottom of the steps through both chambers is scorched black from dragonfire. A dozen or more charred skeletal remains litter the floor, making it difficult to distinguish individual bodies. One skeleton stands out as more recent (dead for three years) and uncharred—it lies face-down at the base of the steps. This dwarf was a member of Hew Hackinstone’s expedition who fell victim to the forge’s undead guardians.

Undead Guardians

Six specters haunt the forge—the vengeful remnants of the mine’s dwarven defenders. Three specters occupy each of the two chambers. When the first character enters either chamber, the three specters in that chamber immediately attack. The specters from the adjoining chamber arrive 2 rounds later as reinforcements. These undead are bound to the location and cannot leave the forge.

Treasure

Dragon fire destroyed or melted most of the dwarves’ possessions, but one charred skeleton wears a mithral breastplate that survived Tinder’s flames intact.
