The Land of Ash and Smoke is a volcanic wasteland in Chult consisting of black volcanic rock crisscrossed with lava streams. This hostile region serves as territory for firenewts and the young red dragon Tzindelor (who is associated with Wyrmheart Mine and bathes in the lava).
Environment
The area is a gray, barren valley that runs 20-40 degrees hotter than the rest of Chult. Unlike the humid jungle peninsula, this region receives minimal rainfall, and what precipitation does fall evaporates quickly in the extreme heat. The combination of volcanic activity, intense heat, and smoke creates a hellish landscape fundamentally different from Chult’s typical environment.
Exploration
The Land of Ash and Smoke remains largely unexplored despite multiple expedition attempts. Most available information about the region—including what appears on Syndra Silvane’s map—comes from visual observations made from the surrounding coastal mountains rather than ground-level exploration. The dangerous conditions and hostile inhabitants have prevented thorough documentation of the area.
