Overview

The Magic Fountain is a circular room located on Level 1 (Rotten Halls) of the Tomb of the Nine Gods. The chamber features a large, moss-crusted fountain at its center with three marble maiden statues holding pitchers from which water continuously flows.

Properties

The fountain produces water with magical effects that vary each time someone drinks from it. The fountain’s effects are unpredictable and can be beneficial, harmful, or strange.

Mechanics

Characters who drink from the fountain experience random magical effects. The trickster god spirits inhabiting party members may offer advice about the fountain, though their counsel varies depending on which spirit is present and their particular personality.

Magic Fountain Effects

When a character drinks from the fountain, roll on a table to determine the effect. Effects can include:

  • Physical transformations
  • Ability score changes
  • Magical boons or curses
  • Other supernatural consequences

The fountain represents one of the tomb’s many tests and hazards, requiring players to weigh the risk of unknown magical effects against potential rewards.

Context

This fountain is one of several magical hazards and features scattered throughout the Tomb of the Nine Gods, designed by the archlich Acererak as both trap and temptation for tomb delvers.
