Maztica lies west of Chult and Faerûn. The continent is the native home of the tabaxi—feline humanoids whom some Chultans call “cat folk” or “leopard people.” The tabaxi are described as a cultured people who are seldom evil.
Connection to Chult
The tabaxi presence in Chult originates from Maztica. Groups of tabaxi arrived in Chult after escaping from slavers, though the specific details of their enslavement are not elaborated. Some of these refugees have integrated into Chultan society, working as guides in Port Nyanzaru, while others venture into the jungle in small hunting parties to pursue grungs and goblins.
Adventure Relevance
Maztica becomes relevant to the adventure through the Eye of Zaltec, one of four legendary treasures hidden in the Tomb of the Nine Gods (found in Area 62). This lost jewel is rumored to possess the power to resurrect the ancient dead, though using such power would require many sacrifices.
If the characters recover the Eye of Zaltec, tabaxi thieves might attempt to steal the jewel and return it to Maztica, potentially trading it for the release of enslaved loved ones—suggesting that slavery continues to affect tabaxi communities and that some remain captive in their homeland.
