The Monkey Bridge is an ancient stone span that crosses Ataaz Muhahah (“Laughing Gorge”), a gaping chasm in Chult. The bridge derives its name from the monkeys that perch on its walls and hang from its underside—a mix of living monkeys and ancient stone carvings integrated into the structure’s design.

Appearance and Atmosphere

The bridge features skilled artistry despite being damaged by time. Symbolic mazes are carved prominently onto the bridge and its supports, associated with the ancient worship of Ubtao (DC 20 Intelligence (Religion) to recall this connection). Most Chultan guides can confirm this religious significance.

Supernatural Phenomenon

The gorge echoes continuously with the chatter and shrieks of living monkeys. Occasionally, the echoes overlap in a peculiar way that transforms the cacophony into what sounds like haughty, gloating laughter. When this occurs, the terrified monkeys fall silent for several minutes until the “laughter” dies away, then resume their normal noise.

Location Context

The bridge is located at Ataaz Muhahah and is shown on map 2.2. It serves as a crossing point over the gorge in the Chultan wilderness.
