Description
Netheril is an ancient magical civilization referenced in connection to the legendary Black Opal Crown. The crown’s original owner, the archmage Sadamor of Netheril, wore this artifact before his tragic downfall.
Historical Significance
Sadamor of Netheril was a powerful archmage who created the Black Opal Crown. According to legend, he gazed into the crown’s opal and witnessed the depths of humanity’s evil reflected within it. Heartbroken by this revelation, Sadamor created a sphere of annihilation as a doomsday device intended to swallow the world, but was ultimately consumed by his own creation.
Connection to the Adventure
The Black Opal Crown survives as one of the tomb’s fabled treasures and is located in area 49 (the maze of death). The yuan-ti nightmare speaker Fenthaza believes the crown possesses the power to awaken Dendar the Night Serpent, making it a target of yuan-ti interest. If the characters acquire the crown, Fenthaza will attempt to kill them before they can escape Chult with it.
