Overview
The Peaks of Flame are an active volcanic mountain range in southern Chult, serving as a major geographical landmark and the location of a legendary sealed portal tied to the apocalyptic yuan-ti prophecy.
Geography & Description
The Peaks of Flame are a cluster of volcanoes and mountains that ring the southern coast of Chult. They are visible from great distances—from atop Firefinger (300 feet elevation), the Peaks can be seen over 20 miles away as part of the southern coastal mountain range. The range produces pyroclastic flows, lava rivers, and drifting ash that devastate the surrounding landscape, particularly the Valley of Embers around Lake Luo.
A river snakes down from the foothills of the Peaks of Flame and flows northeast into the lost city of Omu through a canyon, providing one of two main access routes into the ruins.
Strategic Importance
The Flaming Fist mercenary company believes the lost city of Omu lies “south of Lake Luo but east of the Peaks of Flame, at the western end of the Valley of Dread.” Their researchers at Fort Beluarian seek adventurers to explore this region, though the distance from their base makes direct support difficult.
The guardian naga Saja N’baza confirms that Omu lies “between the Peaks of Flame and the Valley of Lost Honor,” sunken below the surrounding jungle canopy. She advises that the city is best spotted from the air or high ground due to its hidden nature.
The Sealed Gate & Yuan-ti Prophecy
The yuan-ti of Omu believe a sealed portal exists somewhere beneath the Peaks of Flame. According to their apocalyptic theology, opening this gate would allow Dendar the Night Serpent—a serpentine destroyer of worlds—to enter the Material Plane. The yuan-ti believe that with the god Ubtao abandoned from Chult over a century ago, nothing can stop Dendar once the gate is opened.
The yuan-ti have dedicated their underground temple in Omu to this goal, though they remain far from achieving it. Ras Nsi, the yuan-ti leader, has formed an alliance with the lich Acererak, who has promised to help unlock the gate in exchange for Ras Nsi defending the Tomb of the Nine Gods.
The Black Opal Crown Connection
One of the four fabled treasures hidden in the Tomb of the Nine Gods is the Black Opal Crown. The yuan-ti actively pursue this artifact, attempting to buy or steal it if adventurers recover it. Whether the crown actually possesses the power to unlock the gate beneath the Peaks of Flame and unleash Dendar is left uncertain, but if it falls into yuan-ti hands, characters may need to venture into the caverns below the Peaks of Flame to prevent an apocalypse.
Regional Access
Cyclopes inhabit the shores of Snapping Turtle Bay and could potentially be hired as guides, bearers, or guards for expeditions heading north into the jungle between the Peaks of Flame and the Valley of Dread. They require payment in metal tools or whimsical magical trinkets.
