The River Tiryki is a treacherous waterway flowing north from a mist-shrouded canyon toward the Bay of Chult, earning its reputation as the most dangerous river in Chult.
Geography and Hazards
The Tiryki is characterized by frequent waterfalls every few miles, making navigation extremely challenging. Traveling upriver by canoe requires laboriously portaging around each cataract, while downstream travel risks canoes being swept over waterfalls or smashed in rapids. The river’s course runs through dense jungle with predators and undead prowling both banks.
Strategic Importance
The river serves as a natural boundary and reference point for several key locations:
- Firefinger: The 300-foot-tall natural spire occupied by pterafolk sits along the river. From this vantage point, the pterafolk can spot anything moving on the river within 10 miles in clear weather, using it as a hunting ground for explorers and hunters
- Dungrunglung: A grung village is located just above the headwater of the Tiryki, due south of Port Nyanzaru
- Fort Beluarian: Baldur’s Gate claims territory east of the Mistcliff, with the Tiryki serving as part of this claimed region. Commander Liara Portyr has received reports of large, unknown creatures (frost giant tracks) in the region between the east coast and the River Tiryki
Threats
Beyond natural hazards, the river is menaced by:
- Pterafolk from Firefinger who prey on travelers
- Grungs near the headwaters
- Jungle predators and undead along both banks
- Frost giants whose search parties have been ranging from the coast to the River Tiryki as they hunt for Artus Cimber
The river’s mouth at the Bay of Chult is visible from Port Nyanzaru across the water.
