The Valley of Embers is a desolate, volcanic wasteland surrounding Lake Luo in southern Chult. The valley has been devastated by pyroclastic flows, lava rivers, and drifting ash from the nearby Peaks of Flame, leaving most vegetation on the southern and eastern shores of the lake destroyed. Fiery embers continuously rain down from the volcanoes onto the blackened landscape.
Geography
The valley can be spotted from elevated vantage points like Firefinger’s pinnacle, appearing as one of the enormous gaps in the jungle canopy alongside the Aldani Basin and Lake Luo. To the north, marshland remains wet enough to survive but has transformed into an almost impassable expanse of knee-deep muck from accumulated ash.
Environment
The region feeds into Lake Luo’s extreme conditions—lava streams down from the Valley of Embers into the lake, contributing to its geothermal heating and creating boiling sections visible as steam clouds from miles away. The shore surrounding the lake is a dead wasteland of ash and salt flats, inhospitable to most life.
Inhabitants
Mud mephits and steam mephits are the primary creatures that thrive in this harsh volcanic environment, taking advantage of the extreme heat and ash-laden terrain.
