Overview
The Valley of Lost Honor is a volcanic ash-covered valley in Chult dominated by firenewts and serving as the site of a historic Chultan tragedy. Once home to the Eshowe tribe, the entire valley was consumed by lava from a nearby volcano after undead hordes led by Ras Nsi wiped out its inhabitants. The bones and all traces of the fallen Chultans were swallowed by volcanic flows, leaving only ash plains and mountains.
Current Occupants
The valley is now firmly under firenewt control, with their territorial claim extending across its entire length. Firenewt warriors mounted on giant striders aggressively patrol the area and attack interlopers they believe they can defeat. The firenewts operate from Hrakhamar, an abandoned dwarven forge in the mountains that they’ve reactivated to craft armor and weapons for themselves.
The only creature whose authority the firenewts respect is Tzindelor (nicknamed “Tinder”), a young female red dragon inhabiting Wyrmheart Mine. An uneasy détente exists between the dragon and the firenewts—both covet what the other possesses. Tzindelor desires Hrakhamar’s forge, while the firenewts want control of Wyrmheart Mine’s iron resources.
Geographic Features
Ataaz Yklwazi (Gorge of Blades)
This deep volcanic canyon serves as the northern gateway to the Valley of Lost Honor. The gorge floor is filled with jagged black basalt formations resembling razor-sharp blades that can easily cut unwary travelers. Firenewt patrols (typically four warriors on giant striders) guard this passage and ambush intruders.
The gorge is also Tzindelor’s favored hunting ground, littered with charred skeletons of her victims. Characters taking a long rest here will encounter the dragon at the end of their rest.
Trade Roads
Century-old dwarven trade roads once connected Hrakhamar to Shilku Bay and other points on the peninsula. While buried under ash in the valley proper, these roads become visible where mountains rise above the ash plain. The dwarven construction has endured decades of neglect, and scorch marks from flame creatures are visible with a successful DC 13 Wisdom (Survival) check.
Strategic Importance
The naga Saja N’baza identifies the valley as one of the key landmarks for locating Omu, which lies between the Peaks of Flame and the Valley of Lost Honor. The valley’s position makes it a significant waypoint for adventurers seeking the forbidden city.
